Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Complex hernias

Recurrent hernias develop after a failed hernia repair surgery. Patients with multiple failed repairs often have complicated hernias with significant disfigurement. Dr. Arevalo is a fellowship-trained in hernia surgery, with great knowledge of the mechanics of the abdominal wall. He performs advanced hernia repair surgery techniques for the treatment of large hernias, massive hernias, and complex hernia revision.

Restoring the displaced tissue and muscle to normal anatomy to improve the functionality and dynamics of the abdominal wall is accomplished by Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (AWR). The restoration of a functional abdominal wall with the patient’s tissue strengthened by mesh is the goal of AWR. Dr. Arevalo performs a NOVEL technique of posterior component separation TAR. He is among the few surgeons in Houston, Texas to perform this complex operation by Robotic Hernia Surgery when indicated.

Often a complete abdominoplasty is offered to patients after the reconstruction. For cosmesis, the excessive skin and fat tissue from the hernia are removed.
